Caravaggio in Rome Tour Description
The Caravaggio Rome Art Tour is a tour of the principal artistic masterpieces of Caravaggio on public display around Rome. Conducted by a professional tour guide with a degree in Art History and a specialism in Caravaggio in particular, this Rome tour is a must for all budding artists, or simply those of you who want to experience some beauty & culture whilst in Rome.
On this guided tour of the art masterpieces of Caravaggio, learn how his own struggles in life brought power to his works as he took religious painting out of idealistic imagery of angels and saints in Roman villas into the naturalistic imagery of Apostles called from the tavern. Meet a man whose work paid homage not to the wealthy but to the poor. Understand why he portrayed saints not as sinless and sure but as penitent and fallen. Words cannot express the power you will encounter in drama captured on canvas as your eyes gravitate over worm eaten fruit, wrinkled skin, violence, fear, life, death, and redemption.
Our tour starts by visiting the beautiful Palazzo Barberini, Once the family palace of the most important patrons of Baroque art. It today is a museum holding three priceless works by the chiaroscuro master including the psychological fixation in his work Narcissus, the gut wrenching realism in his Judith beheading Holofernes, and the solemnity in his St. Francis in Meditation.
We then take a walk down to the Galleria Doria Pamphilj to see the beautiful penitence captured in Caravaggio’s Mary Magdalene, the softness of the angelic folds in the Rest on the Flight from Egypt and the innocent of youth captured on face of his John the Baptist.
Often the works of Caravaggio are found on cold walls or laminated pages but at our next visit to the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi you will discover three of his masterpieces in there intended setting as a religious cycle brought to life by a candle lit alter throwing light across the theatrical chiaroscuro canvas.
Finally onto the church of San Agostino to marvel at the detail in the faces of two pilgrims kneeling before the Mary in the painting the Madonna del Loreto there you will catch a glimpse not just of the piety and faith the kneeling but of the artist.
