Mary & the Saints of Rome Tour Description

Rome is a city blessed with over 900 hundred churches and each is a treasure of art and architecture unto themselves. On this tour we will explore theology and history behind honoring Mary and the Saints and learn how the art and architecture expressed such piety.

Our tour begins at the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri located near Termini train station and build into the Roman ruins of the baths of Diocletian. There you will see not only the architectural talents but the faith of the third order Franciscan artist Michelangelo Buonaroti.

From there we make our way to Church of Santa Maria della Victoria holding the then controversial and powerful baroque statue of the Ecstasy of Teresa by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

We then make our way to the Church of San Andrea della Frate near the house of Bernini it holds two original angelic statues once set on the Angels Bridge of Rome. On we go to the Church of San Lorenzo in Lucina named for the 4th century deacon and Martyr.

We continue on to The Church of San Silvestro in Capite originally built in the 8th century to house relics brought from the catacombs among which still held in the church are the fragments of the head of John the Baptist.

And lastly we make our way the Church of the Twelve Holy Apostles built to celebrate a defeat of the Ostrogoths in the Byzantine attempt of Justinian to recapture the west. Originally dedicated to the Apostles James the younger and Philip whose relics were brought from the catacombs to the church in the 9th century.

Mary & The Saints Tour

If you are going to Rome and wish to experience the many churches Rome has to offer, then this tour company is for you. My wife and I were making our second trip to Rome in two years and wanted to see what we missed the first time. We did the Passion of Christ Tour with Adrian. There were just 2 couples(including us) on this tour. At each church Adrian took his time to explain the highlights within and answered all questions. The highlight of this tour are the Holy Stairs. The same stairs that Jesus descended in condemnation. Last year our tour did not allow enough time to ascend them but Adrian said if we wanted to that it was our tour and we had time. It was an amazing but painful experience. The next evening was Mary & the Saints Tour. James, our guide was fantastic. We had the tour all to ourselves. As with the night before the information that was given was given as we strolled from one church to another was amazing. From the beginning you could see James had a passion for what he does. We were walking by a church which was not on the itinerary but he said we had to stop because there was something special inside. He did this a couple of times. He wanted us to see everything possible. James and Adrian had different approaches but each delivered a faith filled tour. Thank you both for 2 wonderful evenings.
