Roman Forum & Palatine Hill Tour of Ancient Rome

For those who want a first class, entertaining, engaging, fun and informative tour of the Ancient Palatine Hill and Roman Forum area, then this is the tour for you.

Perhaps you have already done the Coliseum and missed out on the other archaeological areas, or perhaps you just don't have too much time... Well, whatever the reason, you will be glad you chose this tour. The guide has never received less than a 5 star review (see the reviews tab) and is renowned for being one of the best guides to learn about the rise and fall of Rome.

After meeting your guide under the Arch of Constantine just outside the Coliseum, you will enter into the Palatine Hill area of the excavations where you will learn that the theme of the tour is "Greatness" - the Greatness of Rome.

Here begins your journey in time going from the 10th Century BC and then travelling with your expert guide up to the eventual fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th Century A.D.

The 1500 years worth of history will be made understandable and digestible to discover the archaeological beginnings of Rome on some hilltops to how it grew to become an Empire that stretched from Portugal to Iran; from North England to North Africa!

Venturing further up the Palatine Hill, you will then learn of the Mytholigical beginnings of Rome to decipher the many emblems and symbols of Rome that you see during your stay in Italy.

Reaching the summit, you then learn about some notable Emperors of Rome such as Emperor Vespasian, Emperor Nero and Emperor Domitian. In particular you will see the archaeological ruins of the Hippodrome of Domitian with an expert explanation of what it was and how it came to be on top of the Palatine Hill.

Continuing on, you will then stroll through the marble courtyards to the magnificent Palace of Domitian where your guide will vividly paint you the picture of its opulence and importance. You will learn about the great Caesar Augustus and understand more about how he fits in with Julius Caesar.

After experiencing the private apartments of Emperor Domitian, you will then venture to the part of his palace that entertained visiting dignitaries, emissaries and persons of importance - Domus Flavia. You will learn of the symbolism present and glimpse into the impression it made on its visitors.

From there you will ascend still further into the 16th Century Gardens of Alexander Farnese and learn of it's links with the glories of France.

Hold on to your hats, because then you will be given an in depth explanation and exploration of the Roman Forum so that the pieces of stone, columns and ruins come alive with your guide explaining their role in the life of Ancient Rome.

From there you will then journey to the end point of the tour - the impressive Arch of Titus - where you will learn of the conquering of Jerusalem and the link between the Jews and the world famous Coliseum (aka Colosseo or Colosseum). It is here that you will also learn more about the rise and fall of Julius Caesar in addition to the rise and fall of Rome itself.

This tour will not only bring alive Ancient Rome and the Republic and Empire, but will also help you make sense of the unravelling of time in today's period too. This is a truly outstanding tour - one of our best - and not to be missed.

Tom the Great

The best part about this holiday for me and my wife was our guide for the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, Tom. If I had had a history teacher at school who displayed the passion and knowledge of his subject that Tom did I would have ended up with a A level instead of a CSE C grade. He bought the history of this fascinating place alive. Brilliant. A very enjoyable few hours made that much better by Tom from Eternal City Tours. Thanks Tom.

Super Tour of Palatine Hill and Forum

Our group of six toured the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum with Tom. The tour was excellent in every respect. Well-structured, humorous, engaged. The tour has a real structure and is compelling in every respect. Tom is happy to talk and answer questions, and always with good humor. Very knowledgeable--but was so approachable. So glad I was able to learn about Roman history and these sights with Tom. Five stars, absolutely.

Incredible Tour Guide

The palatine hill/ Roman forum tour, I cannot praise our guide (Tom) highly enough. The knowledge of the history period was outstanding and really engaging (rather than some stuffy tours we’ve been on) If you’re thinking of winging the two landmarks and viewing yourself I’d advise against it. To have extra information as to what ‘rocks’ represented and why they were there really made it a worthwhile morning out.

Well pitched for the common man

I make no apology that I have the attention span of a goldfish, and after 6 days of historical Rome I was a little brain-fogged over ruins, dates, Emperors and who is related to whom. However, our guide English Tom was fantastic: he delivered a very interesting and humorous snapshot of history, in a vivid and pictorial way, that kept me engaged rather than glazing over and wondering what was for lunch. The story he told of the Romans and the progression from Republic to Empire was well pitched. Hey, I might even have remembered some of it (unusual for me!). I highly recommend finding out which tour Tom does and booking in for that.

Exceeded Expectations

We met up with our guide who introduced himself as Tom. He took us on a wonderful adventure through Palatine Hill and weaved the history of Rome into the sites and scenery. We finished the adventure off at the forum where we were able to go off on our own to take in more history. All in all it was a great tour and experience and we were well taken care of. I would recommend Tom to anyone who is interested in seeing the forum and hill.
