St Benedict in Rome Tour Description

Apart from Our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Apostles, it is hard to think of anyone who has affected the development of Western Civilisation as much as St Benedict of Nursia. His "Rule for Monks", written at a time when society was falling apart as Rome had fallen, gave rise to the Benedictine Order and he is rightly regarded as the Father of Western Monasticism.

You begin at the mother house of the Benedictine Order - Sant Anselmo, to learn more about the monastic origins, the twists and turns of its development through history, and the structure of the Order of St Benedict today.

From this overview, you will peer through the breathtaking keyhole of Rome - famous for the view that lies beyond, before you journey on to the mother house of the Dominican Order - Santa Sabina, where St Dominic and his later saintly sons once lived including St Thomas Aquinas.

You then go next door into the romantic and stunning orange garden with breathtaking views over the city of Rome before venturing down the hill, past Circus Maximus to visit the skull of St Valentine and the famous Mouth of Truth.

Ambling on, you venture onto the ancient Tiber Island with reflection on St Benedict and ecumenism before visiting the relics of the Holy Apostle St Bartholomew and the shrines of the 20th & 21st century martyrs.

Strolling a little further, you will come to the family home of St Benedict where he once lived in Rome before venturing off to discover his monastic calling.

Winding through the charming narrow streets of Trastevere we find the hidden gem of the Abbey of St Cecelias built over the house where the Roman Cecelia was martyred in the first centuries. You will learn about Gregorian chant with the convent of Benedictine nuns there and see the relics of St Cecilia.

Finally we end up in the centre of Trastevere at the famous and ancient Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere to learn about its history and beauty before meandering off into the crowds for a cool gelato, or other type of refreshment.

This is a must do tour for all pilgrims and those interested in Benedictine Spirituality and the father of Western Monasticism - St Benedict
